Robert Eugene Smith, a resident of Princeton, Texas, passed away on October 4, 2024, at the age of 77. He was born on December 21, 1946, to Orville and Beulah (Jenkins) Smith in Climax, Texas. He was a proud lifelong member of the Princeton community.
Robert enlisted in the United States Navy on May 1, 1964, serving his country with honor before receiving an honorable discharge. He enlisted while still in high school and attended basic training between his junior and senior year. He graduated from Princeton High School in 1965 and shipped out to serve in Vietnam immediately after graduation. He later earned his associate degree from Richland College in Dallas, Texas, using his GI bill.
Robert was a hard worker, he worked as a kid picking and hoeing cotton and okra and with his brother W.A. (Dub) in construction. He worked two jobs after discharged from the Navy. General Motors night shift and hanging sheetrock on day shift. After receiving his degree, he served as a traveling salesman and then Vice President of Wel-Cote Mfg. He left Wel-Cote and founded Smith Construction, making significant contributions to the industry and the community he loved. He had to work several years past his retirement date to wrap up all the jobs for people who only wanted him to put on their roof.
In 2024, Robert was honored as Citizen of the Year by the Princeton Chamber of Commerce, a testament to his commitment to his hometown and its residents. He had a passion for the outdoors, finding joy in traveling, camping, boating and building gifts for his daughter with his grandchildren. He loved spending time with his grandkids and family at the farm and lake house. His grandchildren’s fondest memories are accompanying their Papa to deliver Meals on Wheels, mowing elderly residents lawns, putting out Flags for the VFW all over town and Wilson Chapel Cemetery.
In 2023, Robert was presented with a Quilt of Valor for his service in Vietnam from the Farmersville Quilt Guild.
Robert was very active with the VFW and American Legion organizations and held multiple positions within the American Legion and VFW. He was Commander of the American Legion Post 96, McKinney Texas in the 90’s as well as numerous other positions. He currently served as the Commander of VFW Post 9167, Princeton, Texas. He found great joy in spreading patriotism and assisting other veterans.
Above all, Robert cherished his family. He was a loving father, a doting Papa, a cherished brother, and beloved Uncle. His greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren, who brought light to his life. Robert was a member of First Baptist Church of Princeton.
Robert will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His legacy of kindness, service, and family devotion will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched.
